2021 : If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

New year, new you, right? There’s a lot of pressure around setting and achieving goals these days. From big life goals down to small daily goals. However, there’s a secret to setting life goals: you have to be true to yourself and what you really want out of life. Once you’ve tapped into what you want – and not what you think you should want – it all falls into place.

Do new year resolutions really work? And if so for how long? Or are they just a fancy way to sound productive and proactive as the year starts? Did you know that 3 in 5 people are most likely to change their entire lifestyle in the new year? Only 1 in that 3 will actually see it through.

What does one do for entertainment in the new year, during a pandemic? Definitely not clubbing, however stay in the present. Keep yourself in check. Declutter your spaces. Make way for new things and here's to a better you this year!

Cheers!

Happy Africa Day

Today we celebrate Africa and her beauty in all aspects. Africa Day is intended to celebrate and acknowledge the successes of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU now the African Union) in the combat against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the progress that Africa has made, while contemplating upon the common challenges that the continent face in a global environment, since its creation on 25 May 1963.

On that account we look at the greatness that we've come to. Celebrating under the theme : Silencing The: Guns Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa's Development and Intensifying the Fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have a long way to go. But today we appreciate and recognise the fight that was put up by our forefathers, their tenacity in creating and maneuvering towards generational emancipation.

Here are a few things you can do today.
• Learn an African language.
• Learn about your favourite country that you would love to travel to.
• Cook your favourite African dish.
• Wear your traditional regalia.
• Listen and sing along to the greatest African musicians.

It is desideratum to recall the words of Kwame Nkrumah, " I'm not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me" and Haile Selassie, "An awareness of our past is essential to the establishment of our personality and our identity as Africans."

Happy Africa Day.

P.S! You do not need a Visa to travel Africa!

Try This Diet Plan To Stay Fit and Healthy

Following up to our previous post Bored In Lockdown? Try These, we hereby recommend a healthy and balanced diet - consisting of plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrains so as to strengthen your immune system and hence maintain your fitness.  The following are essential in supporting immunity and promoting weight loss. Let's dive into it!!

Copper: Plays a major role in maintaining a healthy body, including the normal functioning of the immune system. Copper therefore helps you make red blood cells, keep nerve cells healthy, break down fat, form collagen, and support the immune system. It is essential for growth and overall health. Food sources are lobsters, squids, oysters, nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables.

Omega-3 fatty acids are healthful and essential fats that can improve inflammation, insulin resistance, and several heart disease risk factors. They can also help fight depression and play an essential role in supporting your immune system, lose weight and combat obesity. Salmon, sardines, trout, catfish, herring, mackerel, chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts and spinach are all examples of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Vitamin D : Studies have suggested that Vitamin D may help protect against respiratory infections. The sunshine vitamin may also help prevent heart disease, ward off depression and boost weight loss. Egg yolk, sardines, salmon, shrimp and fortified foods such as orange juice, milk, yogurt and cereal are foods to eat to improve your vitamin D levels.

Iron's nutritional benefits of this nutrient range from boosting immunity and haemoglobin to eliminating fatigue and preserving many vital functions in the body. Some of the best food sources of iron include - egg, liver, beef, canned salmon, legumes ,nuts ,wholegrain cereals, dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli.

Dietary fibre helps you lose weight and reduce belly fat, It reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain forms of cancer. It promotes healthier gut bacteria, which contribute to a healthy immune system. Fibre is essential for your digestive health and regular bowel movements among several other important bodily functions. Ensure that you get a variety of fibre from whole fruits, vegetables, and grains to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Examples are broccoli, carrots, peas, beans, pulses, berries, pears, oranges, wholegrains, nuts and seeds.

In summary, good nutrition and regular physical activity are the backbone to a healthier life. Thank You.

PLEASE NOTE: It is advisable to consult your doctor or a dietician before starting any fitness programme or making any changes to your diet.
